Artsy Outhouse

I took a picture of this old falling down outhouse last weekend. An outhouse was an outdoor toilet way back before indoor plumbing. Most of you are probably too young to remember them but we had one when I was a kid. I definately remember the smell in the summertime.

Anyway, I didn't like the way the photo turned out. The background was too light. It was an hour drive to get the shot so I might not get back there soon to reshoot. Other than the background, I really liked the shot so I played with it awhile and came up with an artsy version I kinda like.

Artistic Out House

This is the original version. Which do you prefer?

  5. I like the artsy one. :)

Shaking lime (the powder) under the seat works wonders for the smell. When I was a kid we used to go to "hunting camps" deep in the woods where an outhouse was the only option. It was a two-seater! lol

  6. It's nice to see both these photos, side by side. One seems the real and one seems the imagined, remembered-with-nostalgia outhouse. Nice show, Faye.

  7. I like them both. One because it looks like a lovely watercolour painting and the other because it's clean and detailed. i like details in a picture.

  8. I prefer original. Without any PS you achieved great subtle artsy effect. Sometimes better is an enemy of good :)

  9. la premiere est un beau traitement peinture, mais je prefere la photo originale, on sent la texture du bois de la maison. bravo pour les deux

the first is a beautiful painting treatment, but I prefer the original photograph, one feels the texture of the wood of the house. cheer for both

  12. Altho I like the "artsy" I prefer the original. It's something I think that Andy Wyeth would paint.

  13. I like both, but I do wonder how it would look with the outhouse sharp and the background treated to the painting effect.

As for outhouses, well they are hot in summer and cold in winter! How well I remember :-)

  14. I like them both as well. The artsy effect is beautiful and lends an ethereal quality to a particularly common (well, once upon a time common) object. The original is beautifully done as well.
